2021 movies I did not post about last year

There are only so many times I can post on this blog in a given year, and I miss posting about a few movies that are noteworthy. So today that’s what I am going to be posting about today. I’ll be writing a few words about some movies I wanted to talk about but missed the chance when they initially came out. Enjoy!

***

  • Mass: A thoughtful treatise on how two families involved in a school shooting handle grief. For a movie with basically four people in it, this probably the best cast of the whole year. Really impressive work; definitely could have been a play though.

  • CODA: We follow the only hearing child of a deaf family as she navigates high school, the family business, and her dreams of going to college. This one probably deserves a full post about it. It is honestly so heart warming. It’s half the reason that Apple TV + plus is worth it. Not sure what the other half is yet.

  • tick, tick…BOOM: Again, a movie that may need a full post about it. Andrew Garfield’s energetic and fun performance as Jonathan Larson is probably his best work to date. Combine this with work in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the man may have had the best year of his career.

  • Don’t Look Up: Hey look! Adam McKay made another funny satire. Did he go a little over the top on this one? Yes. Are right-wing politicians an easy target? Yes, but that is their own fault. Is this movie a fun watch? Yes. Did it make me hate Elon Musk even more? Yes.

  • The Fear Street Trilogy: Honestly this is the most overlooked project Netflix has had the last few years. These are not the best horror movies but they are an excellent homage to older entries in this genre. Plus the tie in between the movies is fairly interesting.

  • Old: M. Night Shyamalan makes weird movies. But they are always unique. The concepts he comes up with are always original in a big way. Plus this a very good cast. I still wanted to see this with my Dad at some point, but we have yet to make it happen.

  • Godzilla vs. Kong: Big Monkey versus Big Radioactive lizard. Spoiler alert a robo-lizard shows up. And of course the first two combatants team up on the robo-lizard. Honestly, who thought King Kong had a chance in this fight?

  • The Green Knight: My wife was not happy we watched this. But honestly it was nice to look at and well-made. Dev Patel is a good actor and I like listening to Ralph Ineson’s voice. Maybe just rent it though.

  • Space Jam: A New Legacy: Neither this movie nor its predecessor are actually any good. The only differences here are that LeBron James is a better actor than Michael Jordan, and Warner Brothers did not use the first one to advertise itself. At least we got that Rick and Morty cameo. (I will not be using this movie as an argument in the GOAT debate between MJ and LeBron.)

  • He’s All That: The perfect example of how some movie ideas ought to be left alone. I cannot believe someone thought remaking a 1990s teen movie that was already bad was a good idea. Plus, you cannot take one look at Tannar Buchanan and tell me this man is not handsome. Beanie on, unshaven, wearing an unzipped hoodie. Whatever it is! He is still good looking. Get out of here with that crap.

Sorry for the lack of original reviews, guys. It is January and there are not a whole lot of recent releases. Hopefully February will bring us some good new movies!

Until I see another one.
